World Atlas of Atmospheric Pollution was commissioned by the International Union of Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations (IUAPPA) to bring together several key scientists in the field to provide a global overview of air pollution and its impacts. The Atlas addresses key topics spanning local to global scales, namely air pollution in cities, transboundary pollution, global pollution and climate change, ozone depletion, environmental and health impacts, and future trends. Wherever possible, the approach has been to provide a global perspective of the problems, which inevitably relies on the use of a wide base of sources. The main purpose of the Atlas is to provide a visual and descriptive comparison of atmospheric pollution for the different regions of our world. It also serves to highlight important areas in which coordinated action would be required for ascertaining a definitive description of the state of our atmosphere and the related impacts. The Atlas makes an important contribution to the field, by stimulating further interest among the wider scientific community and the public, not only to better understand the extent of atmospheric pollution, but also highlights our role in defining its future state. In order to achieve this aim, every effort has been made to present the information in the Atlas in a way that makes it useful to the non-expert as well as to the more informed reader.
